HOSPICE CARE – QUALITY OF LIFE AT THE END OF LIFE
At first glance, plastic surgery and hospice care might seem to have nothing in common. After all, of what use is plastic surgery to the terminally ill? From the point of view of values, however, they share much. While neither plastic surgery or hospice care prolong life, both are dedicated to helping the individual obtain the best quality of life. Contemporary, high-tech medical care is truly miraculous in treating potentially curable diseases! Our medical capability is one of the proudest achievements of our society. There comes a time in many lives, however, when niaximum treatment serves not to cure but only to prolong suffering at a time when our loved one would benefit more from comfort measures and being close to the family than from the unavoidable isolating environment of the modern hospital. The decisions involved in these issues are never easy. Open, frank discussion within the family and between the family and the treating physicians is the best course.
